For the 34th year, the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy will conduct summer music camps. Our 10-day camps are designed to challenge young string, brass, wind and percussion musicians — from beginner to advanced players. Our camps are led by some of Ottawa’s finest professional musicians and teachers. Daily ensemble playing, group lessons, theory and ear training lead up to a concert on the final day. Sports, crafts and recreation activities balance the musical studies to create a fun and fulfilling camp experience.

Camps hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (except for Preschool Camp).

Cost: $495 ($265 for Preschool Camp) Subject to change. Pre- and post-camp supervision is available for an additional fee.

FOR THE YOUNG MUSICIAN

1. PRESCHOOL MUSIC CAMP
This one week, half-day program involves singing, movement, percussion instruments and art activities. The theme is “Getting to Know the Instruments of the Orchestra.” This program provides young children with an understanding of music and musical expression and sets an excellent foundation for future musical learning. Applicants must be age 4 by July 1, 2017. (Note: 2nd week is a repetition of 1st week.)
Prerequisite: None
Level: Ages 4 and 5
Time: 9:45 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.
Dates: Session 1 – July 10 to 14; Session 2 – July 17 to 21

STRING PROGRAMS

2. DISCOVERING STRINGS
This program provides an opportunity to explore the basics of your choice of violin, viola or cello. Campers will receive a half-hour group lesson daily by a string specialist. The program also involves singing, movement, percussion instruments and art activities. Please indicate your choice of instrument when registering. Instruments will be provided. Cellists need to indicate their height when registering. Campers must be age 6 by July 1, 2017.
Prerequisite: None
Level: Ages 6 and 7
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

3. BEGINNER STRINGS
Here is your chance to learn to play the violin, viola, cello or double bass in a group while also participating in all other camp activities. Private lessons with a specialist can be arranged for an additional fee. Please indicate your choice of instrument when registering. Instruments will be provided. Cellists need to indicate their height when registering.

Level: Ages 8 and older

4. PRIMARY ENSEMBLE
This program introduces young string players to the fun of ensemble playing. Campers will receive two 40-minute group lessons per day, taught by a string specialist. There will also be singing, movement, art activities and the use of percussion instruments.
Prerequisite: 1 year of playing
Level: Ages 6 to 8
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

5. ELEMENTARY ENSEMBLE
Learn music appreciation, movement and ensemble skills with this string ensemble program covering a variety of pieces at different levels of difficulty. Students will work on intonation, rhythm and dynamics as well as ensemble playing.
Prerequisite: Experience equal to grades 1-3 of the Royal Conservatory of Music or up to and including Suzuki Book 3
Level: Ages 8 and older
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

6.  CHAMBER MUSIC
Discover the fun of making music in a string orchestra, quartet, trio or duet. Focus is on string technique and coaching in small ensemble playing. Newcomers to the Academy will be asked to play a scale and a piece in advance of the camp.
Prerequisite: Experience equal to Grade 4 & up of the Royal Conservatory of Music or Suzuki Book 4 and up
Level: Ages 8 and older

7. HARP ENSEMBLE
For harpists with at least one year of experience, this camp is an opportunity to expand on individual skills and ensemble performance within an inspiring and supportive environment! Through daily creative activities, students will focus on technique, music theory, ear training, and performance presence. Together, the group will also create a composition which will be performed on the final day of camp!

WINDS, BRASS & PERCUSSION PROGRAMS

8.  DISCOVERING WINDS
Learn to play the recorder, the base for learning other wind instruments. The program also involves singing, movement, percussion instruments and art activities.

9. BEGINNER WOODWINDS AND BRASS
If you are starting band at school in September, this is a great opportunity to get a jump start. Or maybe you’d like to try a new instrument? Choose flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone or baritone. We emphasize proper playing posture, tone production, learning new notes and playing pieces together as an ensemble. Every day you will have two classes on your new instrument as well as all the other summer camp activities. Please indicate choice of instrument when registering. Instruments are provided.

10.  WOODWINDS 1
Learn to improve your woodwind skills through emphasis on tone production and musicianship, and join in the fun of a woodwind choir. Private lessons with a specialist can be arranged for an additional fee.
Prerequisite: Up to two years of playing experience
Level: Ages 10 and older
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

11. WOODWINDS 2
A continuation of Woodwinds 1, with an emphasis on the study and interpretation of chamber wind works.
Prerequisite: Two or more years of experience (an audition must be arranged for those with less experience)
Level: Ages 10 and older
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dates: July 10 to 21

12. BRASS
This program emphasizes basic techniques including tone production, range and articulation. More advanced students will concentrate on tone quality, flexibility, endurance and range, and have the opportunity for master classes and solo work. Students will play in small ensembles and a brass band. Private lessons with a specialist are available for an additional fee.  
Prerequisite: One or more years of experience (an audition must be arranged for those with less experience)
Level: Ages 12 and older
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

13. PERCUSSION
Percussionists – here’s how to be the star of your school band! Let our percussion professional improve your technique, rhythm, reading ability and ensemble skills. Instruments studied include: snare drum, timpani, xylophone and drum set.
Prerequisite: Any level, beginners welcome
Level: Ages 10 and older
Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Faculty members include Beverley Robinson, Camp Director, Brigitte Amyot, Angus Armstrong, Sid Arnold, Christie Bitar, Angela Casagrande, Andrew Harris, Jo Ann Simpson, Nadia Lemaire, Patricia Deek, Jenny Deek, Polly McCombe, Yvrose Philippe-Auguste, Tammy Shaw and Erica Smith. All members are active in the Ottawa music professional and teaching community, including the National Arts Centre and Ottawa Symphony orchestras, l’Orchestre des concerts symphoniques de Gatineau, and the University of Ottawa Music Faculty.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Pre- and Post-camp Supervision: Supervision is available from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at an additional cost of $50 for 2 weeks; and from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. for additional cost of $50 for 2 weeks.

Placement auditions may be required to determine the appropriate placement of the camper.

Fees are due and payable at registration.

A $20 administration fee will be retained when a child withdraws. No refunds are given after the second day of camp.


The Academy reserves the right to cancel any program with insufficient enrollment. Fees for cancelled programs are 100% refundable.
